Who we are
OSPA was founded in 2009 and became a Cape Verde registered charity in 2011. Our rehoming centre was created in 2015. We later became a UK registered charity in August 2023.
Our mission is to care for and improve the quality of life for sick, injured, abused or neglected dogs and cats, assist with education and neutering to fight overpopulation, and provide care, protection, treatment and security for those animals in need.
Today at OSPA
- 72 dogs currently in residence
- No cat facilities at centre — but we help cats island-wide
- Many dogs are harness trained and love visitor walks
- 22 pens (suites) needing ongoing maintenance
Beach dogs & hotel cats
Community animals are mostly well looked after by tourists. OSPA steps in when they become ill or injured, and we do our best to ensure neutering where possible.
Can OSPA hold a beach dog until adoption?
Unfortunately not — we lack capacity even if costs are covered. We can advise on the process and help find private foster carers.
Working with other charities
Three registered animal charities operate on Sal. We're independent but collaborate whenever needed for the animals.
Together against cruelty
We advocate for #CaboVerdePoisonFree — Morabeza should extend to every living creature on these islands.
